The mussel is the gastronomic symbol of food par excellence of the Taranto area. It is the product most representative of the Ionian capital and its maritime tradition. Mussel farming has been one of the most thriving businesses in the city of Taranto since the 11th century. The Taranto mussel is appreciated all over the world for its sensory qualities, due to the particularity of the marine environment where it is grown, that is, the mixture of salt water and fresh water of karstic origin. These particular environmental conditions of the seas around Taranto, are ideal for mussels in terms of quality and taste, thanks to the contribution of numerous underwater springs of fresh water called ‘citri.’ Water exchange lowers saltiness and facilitates mussel growth.

Our pre-fattened mussels are shipped for re-immersion in other seas until they are fully matured. The seafood product, born in the Ionian Sea, acquires the characteristics of taste, flavour and healthiness of the sea in which it grows.
